What is Pilates?
Pilates was originally developed by Joseph Pilates, a German Physical Trainer, in the early 1900s. It’s an exercise philosophy which has withstood the test of time. Core strength and flexibility are the key focuses of Pilates.
You may have friends, family or colleagues that do Pilates. It’s an exercise approach that has outlasted most exercise fads, and has become one of the world’s most popular movements.
The Pilates method can be modified by skilled instructors to suit everyone including back pain sufferers, performers, professional athletes, weekend warriors and mum’s returning to exercise. It’s also ideal for the elderly, as it promotes healthy, pain-free ageing.
Pilates is also an amazing exercise method for physical rehabilitation i.e. getting away from pain. This is the reason the more progressive Physiotherapy practices now provide Pilates.
What can OnPoint Pilates do for you?
The list of benefits for participating in Pilates is endless. Here are a few of the most sought after:
- Becoming stronger – in Pilates your midsection is considered the ‘POWERHOUSE’. It includes the transverse abdominus, pelvicfloor, rectus abdominus, erector spinae and obliques. These muscles are hugely important for pain control, performance and injury prevention. Shoring up these muscles is a wonderful option for people with back pain.
- Becoming flexible – Pilates combines strength and flexibility based movements to get the resultsyou’re after. Achieving both will allow smooth, fluid function.
- Becoming leaner – Pilates is a tried and tested toning
Regular Pilates practice can help you get in shape, and then stay in shape. There is a strong focus on the buttock, thighs, upper arm and stomach region. Building muscle will accelerate your metabolism, which means you’ll start burning fat, even when you’re sitting.
Joseph Pilates once said:
‘In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 sessions you will notice the difference, and in 30 sessions you will be on your way to having a whole new body’.
